What exactly is coaching and how and when do I use it?

“Just the thought that you might need help, in addition to the uncertainties in this context, often brings you to the next problem:

How do I find out whether someone works in a serious, sound and recognized certified way, and whether the methodology used is helpful (in my case)?

And anyway… Isn’t it expensive?”

Similar to the search for a new dentist or hairdresser, you ask acquaintances, friends or family. You’ll usually find someone who has a recommendation.

Very good, that would be a start.

After all, a dentist is a dentist.

But even if he did such a great job on my cousin Gabi’s molar filling, will he also be able to deal with my complex periodontal problem and root canal treatment?

It’s a good idea to find out beforehand.

Describe your problem.

Does the dentist have experience in periodontology? What is his main focus of work? Are there any other references?

The girlfriend has a cool new hairstyle. You are delighted with the professional cut. And because you’ve been unhappy with your mane for a while, you make an appointment at the same salon. This is how referral marketing works.

We see a great result and hear the satisfaction of others. This is convincing, builds trust and paves the way for the first step of confiding in an expert with your issue or problem.

It’s no different when it comes to coaching. Friends, colleagues or business partners who share their experiences of coaching with me also recommend me to others. Alongside the work with my clients, this is the highest accolade for me, for which I am very grateful.

But sometimes there is no one in your own environment that you could or would like to ask. This is where the Internet comes in handy. But the dimensions quickly become unmanageable when it comes to finding the right coach. Therefore, even if you can neither name nor narrow down your topic precisely, I recommend a rough clustering.

Is it about your career, relationship, family or yourself personally?

Is it about achieving a short-term goal or a long-standing issue that you want to change? A mixture?

Do you have a preference for a male or female coach?

Should the coaching necessarily take place in your area, or should/may it (also) be possible online?

You have now created a keyword list for your research. Take a look around. Which offers appeal to you? Get in touch with them. Take advantage of introductory offers and listen to your gut feeling.

Get started and give it a chance. However, if you realize after two or three sessions that the approach or the coach is not right for you after all, talk about it openly and allow yourself to stop the process and reorient yourself.

For a deeper understanding, I would like to give you some answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ) about my coaching:

Question 1: When is the right time to start coaching?

Answer: The right time is always when you have developed a noticeable awareness of the problem. In other words, when you realize that you may have reached the same point again and are stuck, or you are facing a new challenge or decision that you don’t want to get wrong.

For example, someone can generally move through life with total confidence and confidence and yet struggle with inhibiting and disturbing feelings of insecurity in very specific situations.

In principle, both negative and positive changes can trigger anxiety. Will you be able to meet the demands of a promotion with personnel responsibility? What salary or what salary increase can I ask for? How?

In day-to-day management, difficult appraisal interviews can be a relevant stress factor, as can personal decisions that can have far-reaching consequences for your career and partnership/family. You want to do the right thing, but you can’t be sure what the right thing is. Which perspective is the “right” one.

Everyone knows these situations and somehow they are mastered. But clients who come to me for several months of coaching no longer master their lives somehow. They become conscious masters of their lives and skillfully set the course so that they can finally say ‘goodbye’ to the repetitive pattern.

Companies usually make this decision as part of long-term, strategic considerations regarding holistic employee development. Often initiated by a change in management or team leadership. In the best case scenario, a change in management also means a change in philosophy towards personnel development through individual and collective learning.

My way of working differs from that of my colleagues in that I do not work according to the principle of one-off workshops or standardized coaching methods.

I see the coaching participants once a month over a longer period of time for a 1:1 session in which we work on individual problems and objectives. In addition to various coaching tools, a strength-based personality test is used for aptitude diagnostics. This provides a simple and efficient way of reflecting on one’s own motivational and leadership behavior in combination with the team dynamics experienced, enabling an efficient introduction to the development of suitable action and reaction options as well as rhetorical discussion techniques.

Question 2: Where does the coaching take place?

Answer: The sessions always take place in person on a 1:1 basis both online via video call and offline in Zurich, or by arrangement at the client’s premises.

Question 3: How long does the session last and how often do you see each other?

Answer: A session lasts 90 minutes and we meet every two weeks.

Question 4: How does your coaching differ from that of others?

Answer: There are various intensities of coaching issues that require different approaches. If you don’t just want to solve an issue for the moment, but want to recognize the causes and fundamentally change them, you should plan for a period of at least 6, more likely 9 to 12 months.

The hypnosystemic coaching approach includes various levels and follows a clear goal. The distinction lies on the one hand in the clear structure and the intensive examination of the personality. In addition to finding solutions for the obvious business/everyday issues, we also work on the unconscious convictions and beliefs that can be made visible and dissolved through systemic constellation work and hypnosis according to Milton H. Erickson. Thanks to this effective combination, the results are very tangible and the change can be felt relatively quickly.

I receive feedback from my clients that the structure, the depth and the clarity of the approach help them to get involved and find the key to the desired change. In developing new strategies and implementing them, they experience their own (new) self-efficacy and the benefit of having an experienced, trustworthy sparring partner at their side.

Question 5: I am already in therapy, but I would also like to do some coaching. Is that possible?

Answer: Basically, a lot does not always help a lot. Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for clients to come to me for coaching after or during behavioral therapy, for example. However, it is important to ensure that the issues have already been worked on for some time. It is not ideal to try to solve an acute issue according to the motto “everything at once and the more the better”. This would provoke an absolute overload, which is why we clarify during the first session in the order clarification what has already been worked on and in what form, or whether you are still involved in other accompanying processes at the same time.

Question 6: My company has granted me a training budget. Can I use this for coaching?

Answer: That depends primarily on the agreement with the employer. However, I have recently been receiving more and more requests from employees from different sectors and at different hierarchical levels who want to use their training budget for personal career coaching.

I don’t want to talk about a trend yet, but I have the impression that awareness has changed, moving away from standardized group training sessions towards individual coaching. The added value is obvious. Continuous support for personal and professional development in a protected environment. This makes it possible to change perspectives, think through sensible approaches, reflect on strategic decision-making processes and much more.

Question 7: My friends say that coaching is only for those who can’t do it otherwise. How do you see that?

Answer: I’m happy to answer that question back. What do you think? To what extent do your friends’ opinions carry weight for you and to what extent are you guided by the opinions of others?

In the past, professional guidance from a coach was reserved for the best – both in sport and in business. Times have changed. Coaching – in its various forms – has now arrived in all possible areas of life. Personal development and self-optimization in their various forms are part of the spirit of the times. So if you don’t want to keep repeating yourself over and over again, you need a coach to help you find your way out. Those who no longer want to be held back by their inner blockages and fears and start coaching are among the winners, while the others watch from the sidelines in their comfort zone. It’s as simple as that.

Question 8: I would like to make coaching possible for my employees. How do I create acceptance for this?

Answer: Set a good example! As the boss, be part of the coaching program and get involved. Coaching offers often fizzle out or end far too early because the management level is left out. Transparency and openness leave little room for skepticism. Demonstrate the added value that coaching has for you and your employees will do the same.

Question 9: Can the success of employee/management coaching in the company be measured? By what?

Answer: There are various studies that measure the success of coaching in companies. Here is a selection of KPIs that improve significantly depending on the specific employee selection and objectives:

Efficiency, communication, conflict management, customer satisfaction, sales success, integrative leadership, social competence, relationship quality, fluctuation, recruitment, personal initiative, employee satisfaction, entrepreneurial thinking, acceptance of responsibility.

Question 10: In which language does the coaching take place?

Answer: My coaching can be booked in German and English.
