Hypnotherapy according to Milton H. Erickson

Hypnosis is an ancient psychotherapeutic method that was greatly expanded by the American Milton H. Erickson (1901 – 1980). Due to his dyslexia, colour blindness and polio from the age of 17, Erickson had to be very sensitive to the most subtle aspects of communication. These experiences greatly influenced his approach to therapy. His way of doing therapy was in many ways unusual and not easy for students to imitate. Many well-known therapists such as Paul Watzlawick and Stephen Gilligan have developed his approach. The founders of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), R. Bandler and J. Grinder, studied Erickson’s communication very closely and there are close links between the two methods.

How does the Ericksonian hypnotherapist see people?

Classical hypnosis is based on suggestibility as an effective factor: if the relationship between client and hypnotist is right, external suggestions can be transformed into positive ones. Erickson, on the other hand, developed an approach based on his own life story, which does justice to the client’s individuality as much as possible. His Utilisation Technique means that the therapeutic offer is based on the client’s individuality, interests, motivation, etc. The prerequisite for this, of course, is not to use schematic formulas, but to adapt the therapy to the uniqueness of the specific person. The hypnotherapist looks at a person’s potential rather than their deficits. Even symptoms are not seen as defects but as special features that need to be changed in a particular way. A person’s wealth of experience is seen as enormous, and the rigidity of thought or behaviour patterns can be broken through trance. We are often unaware of this wealth of experience. While the conscious mind tends to master structuring, controlling abilities, the unconscious mind has creative solutions that can be used as a resource. In Ericksonian hypnotherapy, the focus is not on the suggestibility of the client, but on the extended processing of information in trance.
